Jaylib Live In LA 2004 [mp3]

This made its rounds over the weekend, and it’s particularly important to me because this was the tour during which I met J Dilla. They came to the Bay @ the Independent and after the show, I spoke to him for a couple of minutes. I had interviewed him for RIME Magazine, so we traded info since I said I’d send him the article. I then told him he was the best and that he, Madlib and DOOM were essentially keeping hip-hop at a higher level. I told him I’d been down since Mad Skillz “It’s Goin Down”, to which he laughed and said “Whoa!” I shook his hand and thanked him, then dipped. So when he passed, I was of course upset, but glad that I was blessed with the opportunity to thank him for all the work he’s done. So once again, thank you Dilla!

Shout out to Stoney Jackson, J.Rocc’s blog where this debuted, and to Stones Throw, where it’s also being hosted. Turn it up!

How I Met..

The Ol’ Dirty Bastard.

It was the summer of 1997. Atlanta, GA, where the players play. The air was humid and moist, and I was working the midnight shift at the local grocery store, Kroger (my ATLiens know the deal). My usual shift consisted of me reading the good magazines, then the boring magazines and then having my nightly piece of Red Velvet cake. Somewhere between my 1st boring mag and my 1st bite of Red Velvet, I looked up at the customer in my line, and it was.. you guessed… the O.D.B..

I was stunned, naturally. The things I most remember are he had this dope straw hat on and his item of choice was a carton of Vanilla ice cream. No spoon, no bowl. 1AM. A carton of ice cream. I asked how he was doing and he said he was drunk. In fact, he said he was the kind of drunk where you can’t get your key inside the key hole. He was super cool, signing an autograph on an old receipt I had laying around. Another customer asked, “Yo, Dirty, don’t you guys have a show with Rage Against The Machine right now?”. Dirty paused, thought it over and said “I don’t know, man, whatever”, and laughed. And that was fun to see, Dirty laughing at his own quirky self. And just like that, he was off into the night.

We miss you Dirty.
Peace and Love to the Jones Family.
Rest in Peace.
