Moka Only + Bootie Brown (Pharcyde) “Hardly Say” [mp3]
From Moka’s latest album, Carrots And Eggs. I was buggin to this one in the bank the other day, and yeah it’s dope. Plus the hook is gruesome. Uhh!

Before there was Sensational, there was Torture. Torture joined the Jungle Brothers in 1992 while they were recording their third album, which was essentially a study in how far one could push the hip-hop boundary before the whole thing exploded. “Ra Ra Kid” is what happened post-explosion. If you get lost, just click your heels and say “there’s no place like home”… you know the rest.
Frank Zappa & the Mothers Of Invention “Boy Wonder Sessions” [zip]
Here’s a strange one for you: Burt Ward aka TV’s Robin from the 60’s Batman show recorded a fan record with Frank Zappa. I found this on some message board last year, then listened to it once I got to LA and it makes surprisingly good bus music. The zip includes outtakes and alternates, so enjoy the awkwardness. Judo Chop!

The greatest singer of our time tears the stage down in San Francisco, circa June ’08. All I know is these other cats better head for cover when his next album drops and that’s really real.
Danny Brown f/ Elzhi “Contra” [mp3]
Spotted this one on twitter via MichiganHipHop and it’s a beast. No games being played this year, people.

This made its rounds over the weekend, and it’s particularly important to me because this was the tour during which I met J Dilla. They came to the Bay @ the Independent and after the show, I spoke to him for a couple of minutes. I had interviewed him for RIME Magazine, so we traded info since I said I’d send him the article. I then told him he was the best and that he, Madlib and DOOM were essentially keeping hip-hop at a higher level. I told him I’d been down since Mad Skillz “It’s Goin Down”, to which he laughed and said “Whoa!” I shook his hand and thanked him, then dipped. So when he passed, I was of course upset, but glad that I was blessed with the opportunity to thank him for all the work he’s done. So once again, thank you Dilla!
Shout out to Stoney Jackson, J.Rocc’s blog where this debuted, and to Stones Throw, where it’s also being hosted. Turn it up!
