“Rappers Will Die Of Natural Causes.”
Open Mike Eagle‘s new LP came out today. This is my review:
Judge an album by its cover. You’re usually right. Looking at the cover of
Open Mike Eagle‘s Rappers Will Die Of Natural Causes., the word that
comes to mind is “event”. And yes, Rappers… has an “album event”
feel, meaning that everything here is offered as a full presentation
& not a playlist of studio faves. The LP is part play, part concert,
and part stand-up routine. Very artsy stand-up, that is. The
kind that doesn’t wait for the laugh… but gets it anyway.
The tone is looser here than on Mike‘s previous LP Unapologetic Art Rap, which
works because it solidifies each album’s identity. It becomes clear that anything
goes by the time a random guy walks onto the album and scolds EVERYBODY. Open Mike builds on fellow Project Blowed MC Nocando‘s contextualizing
of LA‘s Low End Theory-style of production into effective album material,
& Rappers… delivers strongly in that respect. Even when the beats lean
towards the esoteric side, Mike‘s deft lyricism centers the listening
experience. You’re waiting to see what he’s gonna say next, and
that is the definition of superior MC’ing. Mike displays his
talents as a keen songwriter, taking on such topics as
faith, money, stereotypes, and washing dishes.
This is an intelligent album that will entertain you, which is no small feat to pull off.
Buy this album now. And the song with MC Paul Barman is VERY weird.
